The Work–Exercise Balance: Why Your Health Comes First (and That’s Okay)

Psst. I get it!

No matter who you are or where you’re at in life, there’s this invisible balancing act we all try to master: balancing work, responsibilities, and squeezing in time for exercise and rest. It’s a cycle, and like all cycles, it naturally has its ups and downs.

Because the truth is, life doesn’t slow down for your plans, deadlines, family commitments, unexpected stressors - they all crowd in. And just like that, that morning run or gym session that used to be sacred? It gets pushed aside, maybe for a day… maybe for a week… maybe indefinitely. And that’s okay to feel frustrated about.

What most of us don’t expect is this at prioritising work over our own wellbeing doesn’t make us stronger or more capable. In fact, ignoring our health has the opposite effect. Research shows that when we don’t protect time for our physical and mental wellbeing, stress and burnout become more likely - and productivity actually drops.

Why Work and Exercise Both Matter

Work gives us purpose, structure, community—and yes, it pays the bills. But your body and mind need exercise and rest just as much as your job needs deadlines and deliverables. A balanced approach helps:

  • 💪 Reduce stress and burnout

  • 🧠 Boost mental clarity and focus

  • ❤️ Support physical health and lower risk of chronic illness

  • 🛌 Improve sleep and emotional wellbeing

  • 🤝 Strengthen relationships and quality of life

None of this is optional if you want to live a long, healthy, fulfilled life. And none of this means that work isn’t important—just that work shouldn’t be the only thing that defines you.

The Balance Isn’t Perfect — and That’s Okay

Just like building a habit, balancing work and exercise isn’t linear. Some weeks you’ll smash your workouts and work may take a back seat. Other weeks you’ll work late, skip training sessions, and feel guilty about it. We’ve all been there.

The balance isn’t a destination — it’s a cycle. Lapses aren’t failure. They’re part of life. The key isn’t perfection, it’s awareness. It’s noticing when things are out of sync and gently steering yourself back, not with harsh self-criticism, but with patience and consistency.

And sometimes, you will need to say no to work commitments so you can say yes to your health. That doesn’t make you weak. It makes you wise.

Putting Your Health First So You Can Support Others

If you’re someone who cares for others: your family, your team, your clients, then this part matters most:

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

When you prioritise exercise, rest, and self-care, you become more present, more resilient, more compassionate, and ultimately more effective in every role you play. You become someone who can show up for others without sacrificing your own wellbeing.

So make time for movement even when life feels busy. Protect your rest even when the to-do list is growing.

They are not luxuries. They are essentials.

Be Kind to Yourself in the Process

If you’ve lost your rhythm, if life has thrown you off balance, or if you’re reading this and feeling overwhelmed, that’s okay. Balance isn’t about never falling off course. It’s about learning how to realign.

  • Set 'weekly non-negotiable' group PT sessions and book them in

  • Block out these workout slots as if it were a meeting

  • Give yourself permission to switch off when the day ends

These aren’t big leaps — but they are consistent choices that honour your health first.

Because at the end of the day, your well-being isn’t a luxury or a “nice-to-have.” It’s the foundation on which everything else in your life: your work, your relationships, your health.

And that’s the kind of balance worth striving for.
