Are You Over 60?

We often receive enquiries from older adults, who are nervous that they are ‘too old’ to get started.

But is there some truth to this? Yes and no…

The simple answer is no, you’re never too old to improve your health and fitness. We would be naive, however, to say that age isn’t a consideration in exercise prescription.

As we get older our bodies work less efficiently. Even from the age of 30 the risk of injury becomes greater, progress becomes slower, and we take longer to recover from exercise and injury. So, when we’re working with these individuals, we must be aware of underlying injuries, and this brings with it an Increased likelihood that we’ll need to make adaptions.

In some cases, this will determine the type of training we undertake, in others it may simply mean that we must adapt the regularity and intensity… Then in some cases it will be clear that we’re working with an individual who has maintain a good level of fitness and physical conditioning throughout life - sometimes more so than the average 20-year-old. The point is, don’t let age stop you, on the contrary, the sooner you can get started the better. But don’t be afraid to adapt to allow for your personal condition.
