10 Years Strong

As we approach 10 years of serving this amazing village we call home, I’ve found myself reflecting. And one thing’s clear—I don’t say it often enough: I’m so proud of what we’ve built.
Did you know that the traditional gift for a 10th anniversary is tin? I didn’t either—until recently. But the symbolism really hits home: tin represents strength, durability, and resilience. Honestly, it’s hard to think of a better metaphor for both business and fitness.
Here’s a stat that really puts things into perspective: only 21% of bricks-and-mortar businesses make it to their 10th birthday. That means that 79 out of every 100 never see this milestone. And I get it. We’ve had our share of highs and lows. There were moments where it felt like we wouldn’t make it—times when throwing in the towel seemed like the only option. The phrase blood, sweat and tears doesn’t even begin to cover it.
So first, let me say a huge thank you to every single person who has helped make this dream a reality. From our amazing staff and our dedicated gym members—past and present—to those who popped in for just a short time, you’ve all been a part of this journey. And to our wider community—the tradespeople, local businesses who get behind our fundraising, The Villages Mag, and so many others—thank you. Your support has meant the world.
When I think about what I’m most proud of over these 10 years, three things come to mind:
1. Fundraising. Every year, JWC sets a goal to raise money for local charities—and over the past decade, we’ve raised more than £50,000. From Bridging the Gap (our current charity partner), to The Remembering Nell Foundation, Visyon and others, we’re incredibly proud to support the causes that matter most to our community.
2. Staff. As a fitness business, we’re lucky to work with a young, passionate team. Watching so many of them begin their careers, grow, and either stay with us or move on to follow their dreams has been a privilege. Some have bought their first homes, started families—and we’re honoured to have played a small part in their journey.
3. Covid. Those years were some of the hardest we’ve ever faced. And for service-based businesses like ours, the challenges didn’t end when the doors reopened. In fact, some of those ripple effects are still felt today. But—true to that tin-like spirit—we pushed through. We’re still here. And we’re stronger for it.
Inspiring Others If there’s one message I hope our story sends, it’s this: chase your dreams. Whether it’s starting a business, switching careers, picking up a new sport, or setting a fitness goal—go for it. It won’t be easy. You’ll doubt yourself. You’ll hit walls. But with perseverance, support, and a bit of stubbornness, amazing things can happen.
If our little business can survive the chaos of a decade, a pandemic, and every curveball in between—so can yours.
Here’s to the next 10 years. Whatever they bring, we’ll face them with the same strength, resilience and community spirit that got us this far.
